The Victim

I wrote The Victim in 1987 and developed it through workshops with The Royal Court Youth Theatre. The original idea came from a poem, The Rape –Anticipated which won a local poetry competition. The Victim went on to be performed during the 1988 Royal Court Young Writer’s festival and was selected for the Interplay international young writer’s festival held in Sydney. The play was then noticed by an English teacher at Amherst High School in Massachusetts and a filmed production won a cable competition organised by Bravo (pictured below).

Despite almost 25 years which have passed since the play was written, the main theme is perhaps of greater relevance today. Not that a crime has been committed but the consequences and the implications of the law in regard to self-defence. A debate that considers - when does protection become assault?
